My name is Alena Hagedorn.  My photography has grown into a creative endeavor fueled by extensive adventures down dusty trails and raging rivers or travels through the awe-inspiring landscapes of America’s National Parks.  I have a special place in my heart for the Grand Canyon, having visited both the north and south rims and have rafted the Colorado River through the Grand Canyon twice!

My photography encompasses fine art night photography, landscapes, travel, and wildlife.  

Night images are among my favorites! Each night image I make is creatively envisioned long before pressing the shutter button.  Working with photography in the low light conditions of the darkness of night allows subjects which may seem quite ordinary in daylight to become amazingly extraordinary!  Magical transformations occur when the camera shutter is open in the darkness, allowing minimal light to be recorded over long periods of time.  Clouds dance in beautiful whisps; stars seemingly leave “trails” revealing their “paths” along the sky, and the Milky Way stretches like a nighttime rainbow arching across the dark sky!  Like an oil painter stroking the canvas with a brush, as a photographic artist, I “paint” creative personal touches of light amidst the scene using a variety of light sources (such as flashlights) during the long exposures until I achieve the artistic mood I envision for each work of art.  Amazingly, I am actually walking around the scene of each photo (within the camera view!) with flashlights, exposing various lighting accents!  It is fascinating to think that I am “secretly” within the photo adding my own creative touch, but cannot be seen in the finished image!
